The Making Of... Dentelles

The making of... Dentelles

In a time when the world spins faster and our lives become more hectic, we realize more than ever how valuable it is to be together with friends and family. It is from this intense desire for togetherness that this lamp collection from Atelier Pierre was developed. Stylish togetherness can now also be organized in an affordable way. Thanks to the warm light of Dentelles, a refreshingly unique concept of mood lamps, you can already create the right "mood". And what is the story behind this special collection?

The inspiration for Dentelles: A look back to the 70s

In the 70s, Lieven and Jenny Vanhalst, founders of the West Flemish family business Vanhalst, used paper lace doilies to give the cakes in their patisserie a festive touch. Inspired by this 'decorative paper for banquets', Paulien and Kaat wanted to create the ultimate mood setters in the form of stylish and affordable lamps. This is how the Dentelles collection of the Vanhalst brand - Atelier Pierre - was born! These lamps have the same shape as a large stack of paper lace doilies. Nostalgia in a modern jacket!

A fun fact: the French word 'Elles' was included in the name, which refers to 'les filles' - the girls. A nice nod to the fact that Dentelles was designed by 2 young ladies.

The creative process

The first sketches already laid the foundations for Dentelles' characteristic properties, including its organic shape and the use of sustainable raw materials. One goal was clear: to design a lamp that is both functional and aesthetically unique and innovative.

The choice of the right material is crucial for the success of any design project. To find the perfect match for Dentelles, the dynamic duo tested different textures and materials. It was essential that the light of the lamps would be cozy and warm to emphasize the unique nature of the design. For Dentelles, PE (Polyethylene) quickly turned out to be the best choice. This material offers durability, lightness and transparency, which allowed Paulien and Kaat to create the typical shape of Dentelles. Moreover, PE is weather-resistant, which also makes these lamps ideal for outdoor use.

To represent the final product as accurately as possible, 3D prints were produced entirely in-house, with our own 3D printer. After extensive tests and refinements, Dentelles went into production. The use of polyethylene as the main material not only makes the lamps durable, but also 100% recyclable. This aligns with the growing trend of sustainable designs and environmental friendliness, terms that are highly valued at Atelier Pierre. The result was a unique, versatile lamp collection, called: Dentelles.

These lamps feel at home in both the living room and bedroom, but can just as easily be taken outside. They are wireless and dimmable, which already earns them the prize for ease of use. Charging is done with a USB cable, dimming is done with a tap on the top of the lamp. There are 4 dimming levels, including an economy mode. These luminaires are available in all sizes, all of them have a cream-colored body. The base is a ring of light metal and comes in 4 colors: black, terra, gold and clay. You can remove this ring for a different look. You unscrew it like the cap of a bottle. Go for a different ring color or literally and figuratively upgrade your lamp or speaker to a higher level with our tripods.

The secret of Dentelles

The Dentelles collection is more than just a series of lighting fixtures; it is a tribute to the times when simple paper lace doilies brought a smile to everyone's face and invited us to come together. Thanks to the creativity of Paulien and Kaat, we can cherish these precious memories and add a new chapter to our desire for togetherness. It helps us remember that the most beautiful things in life often arise from a simple idea pursued with passion and dedication. Dentelles brings warmth, style and affordable elegance together, and reminds us that creating beautiful moments with loved ones is always within reach.
